Schaefers Honored For 40 Years of Service

JoAnn Schaefers was honored by GROW South Dakota for her 40 years of combined service as a member of their Board of Directors. GROW South Dakota serves northeast South Dakota through housing, community and economic development.
Schaefers served on the Northeast South Dakota Community Action Program (NESDCAP also known as GROW South Dakota) Board of Directors for 10 years, including a number of terms on the State Community Action Board. Following her tenure on the NESDCAP Board she began serving on the Northeast South Dakota Economic Corporation (NESDEC also known as GROW South Dakota) since 1984. “JoAnn’s dedication to rural communities and small business owners has been a tremendous asset to our organization” said CEO, Lori Finnesand. “We are thankful for her continued service on our Board.” It is estimated that Schaefers has traveled nearly 95,895 miles and has contributed 2,280 volunteer hours attending board meetings.
During Schaefers’ 30 years on the NESDEC Board she has overseen 1,745 closed business loans totaling nearly $54.7 million, which created or saved 10,162 jobs in South Dakota towns. “It has been my privilege to help accomplish all that we have in my 40 years with the board. I truly believe the people we have served would not have been served if it wasn’t for these programs and the exceptional staff who work with these programs.” Schaefers said.
In addition to serving on GROW South Dakota Boards Schaefers is an active member of her community. She has been a correspondent for Polo/Orient area news for 41 years for the Faulkton and Miller newspapers, is a dedicated member of the Catholic Daughters of America having served in state and national offices during her 61 years, has held numerous positions on Polo community Boards as well as active member of St. Liborius Church, including organist for many years. JoAnn and her husband Jack live on their family farm in Polo. They have 10 children, 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
