Darci James and Jackie Hoven, Owners; Webster, South Dakota
With a graphic design degree, Darci James had yearned to get into a career where she could utilize her creative talents and provide a needed service to her community. With her aunt running a successful embroidery business in Rapid City, the idea of starting a similar business in Webster was appealing to her. Darci reached out to her friend, Jacki Hoven, and the two brainstormed on the possibilities.
With help from GROW South Dakota staff, the duo put together financial projections and realized that their idea could become a reality. With financing from GROW South Dakota and another local nonprofit organization; the two business owners opened their retail print and embroidery shop on Main Street in Webster. Two years after opening their doors, they relocated to a larger location to continue to grow their business.
Along the way, the two of them learned some tough business lessons; however, through hard work and determination they are happy with how the business has grown since they opened their doors two short years ago. They have contributed their success to the customer service they provide along with the support of the Webster community and surrounding communities. They are focused on providing a quality product at a reasonable price and turnaround period. Because of this, they have had to do very little advertising with the majority of their new business coming from referrals.
