Heartland Region Backpack Program Receives $50 Pay-It-Forward Donation

Strong communities cannot be built without supporting their most vulnerable citizens, especially the youngest. With that mission in mind, the Heartland Region Backpack Program provides supplemental food items to more than 400 children in the Huron area every week. It is a recipient of a $50 donation from GROW South Dakota’s Pay-It-Forward initiative.
GROW South Dakota has been helping communities for fifty years, and to celebrate that milestone, each staff member and board member has received $50 to donate to a community organization. Gene Ellenson, a NESDCAP board member, donated to the Backpack program for its role in supporting the future. It serves children in all three Huron public elementary schools, Wolsey-Wessington, Iroquois, Holy Trinity and Huron Headstart during the school year. The program is under the auspices of the United Way Heartland Region.
“We value our board members and staff and the passion they have for the communities we serve. This Pay-It-Forward event is a small token of our appreciation toward all of the local organizations that make communities better places to live and work,” said GROW South Dakota CEO Marcia Erickson.
