GROW South Dakota Helps to Revitalize the Community
Celebrating NeighborWorks Week 2015

As a NeighborWorks® America chartered member, GROW South Dakota hosted a NeighborWorks Week  open house and volunteer work day on June 8, 2015, for a home being revitalized at 1290 Kansas Ave SE, Huron, South Dakota. The home was donated to GROW South Dakota by the National Community Stabilization Trust through the support of Wells Fargo Bank for the purpose of revitalizing the home and reselling the property to an eligible home buyer.

As part of the day’s events, Tim Carl and Cory Peterson, Weatherization Installers for GROW South Dakota, demonstrated a blower door test at the home in Huron to determine the amount of air sealing measures the structure needed to make it more energy efficient. Those attending the demonstration also learned the reasons for establishing the proper structure tightness, such as: 1)Reducing energy consumption due to air leakage; 2) Avoiding moisture condensation problems; 3) Avoiding uncomfortable drafts caused by cold air leaking in from the outdoors; and 4) Determining how much mechanical ventilation might be needed to provide acceptable indoor air quality.

Local volunteers, Gene Ellenson, Dakotaland Feeds, LLC and Pat Kisely, Pro-Realty, along with GROW SD staff spent the day landscaping around the home and painting the interior of the house in order to enhance the home and make it more welcoming to the neighbors and future owner. The Huron United Way assisted GROW SD in securing one of the volunteers.

In the upcoming weeks, GROW South Dakota will also install new kitchen cabinets and flooring on the main level of the house.  Once these improvements have been completed, the property will be listed for sale.  This home has 4 bedrooms (three on the upper level and one on the main floor) and 1 bathroom.  The house is set on a roomy corner lot with an unattached two-stall garage for off-street parking and storage.  The home also features a cement patio for outdoor living space between the house and garage.

The national NeighborWorks® network is an affiliation of more than 245 nonprofit organizations located in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In 2014, the NeighborWorks members in South Dakota helped 770 individuals and families with affordable housing and counseling and made a total investment of $63.7 million creating opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives, and strengthen their communities.
