GROW South Dakota Enhances Board Governance with $10,000 Grant from NeighborWorks America

Tuesday, September 06, 2016

GROW South Dakota has received a $10,000 grant from NeighborWorks America to recognize its work building a stronger and more effective board of directors. Effective boards of directors have been shown to be an essential part of a nonprofit community development corporation’s ability to efficiently deliver services and sustain business operations long-term.

The Excellence in Governance program involved a small team of board members and the CEOs to lead the process with the full board.  The GROW South Dakota Leadership Team members were Chair Debbie Anderson of Peever, Vice Chair Dwight Hossle of Faulkton, and Secretary Vikki Day of Highmore, as well as CEOs Marcia Erickson and Lori Finnesand.

The team was coached for 18 months by Judith Rose, a NeighborWorks America staff member with extensive experience in community development and board governance.

“We were excited and pleased to be able to participate in the Excellence in Governance program,” said Debbie Anderson. “Not only did we learn more about leading a nonprofit and strengthening our organization, we grew stronger as a leadership team because we went through the experience together. We look forward to great new things for GROW South Dakota!”

GROW SD is one of 16 nonprofits to participate in the NeighborWorks Excellence in Governance program launched in 2011. Excellence in Governance is an 18-month training program designed to help nonprofit executives and board members of nonprofits increase collaboration internally and effectively develop new partnerships outside the organization, all with an emphasis on improving community-level outcomes. In short, the program is designed to move organizations and their boards from “good to great.”

“Board governance is crucial for nonprofit success,” said NeighborWorks America President and CEO Paul Weech. “Excellence in Governance trains boards and executive leadership to excel in their roles so that they can help an organization fully reach its mission and serve its clients.”

NeighborWorks America is one of the nation’s largest community development grant makers and is the largest trainer of nonprofit community development nonprofits in the country.

GROW South Dakota has served South Dakota communities since 1966. The organization excels at providing housing, community, and economic development to 10,000 customers annually. GROW South Dakota consists of three separate private nonprofit agencies.
