News announcement from Small Business Development Center & America's SBDC

ABERDEEN, S.D - Kelly Weaver, regional director of the South Dakota Small Business Development Center in Aberdeen, is being recognized as a strong advocate for small businesses. Weaver, who has been with the SBDC since 1998, has been named South Dakota’s “State Star” for 2017 by America’s SBDC, the national trade association for the SBDC network.

Weaver and State Star winners from other states were honored recently at the America’s SBDC Conference in Nashville. Weaver was selected for the award by her peers, in part, for her work with the South Dakota BIG Idea contest, a statewide competition for high school students. Last year, the business idea contest attracted 303 entries from 468 students.

“Kelly is a consummate professional and an incredible advocate for the Aberdeen region and economic development,” said Jeff Eckhoff, state director of the South Dakota SBDC. “I am constantly impressed by the network she has established and the great recognition she brings to the SBDC in her area.”

Weaver said she was surprised and grateful for the recognition. “We have such a great group of counselors in South Dakota. Any one of them would be a worthy candidate for this award. I’m fortunate and happy to be part of such a great team,” she said.
In addition to assisting new and existing businesses with free consulting services, Weaver and other SBDC staff members can help connect business people to other experts and resources.

The Aberdeen SBDC office serves a 13-county area in north-central South Dakota. The counties are Beadle, Brown, Campbell, Day, Edmunds, Faulk, Hand, Marshall, McPherson, Potter, Roberts, Spink and Walworth. To provide business services in the Aberdeen region, the SBDC contracts with GROW South Dakota, a nonprofit organization that promotes economic, community and housing development.
Marcia Erickson, CEO of GROW South Dakota, said Weaver does a great job and the organization is fortunate to have her on staff. “She is a very dedicated, exemplary leader heading up our Small Business Development Center in Aberdeen. If there are businesses out there looking to start up or expand, Kelly and (SBDC business consultant) Carla Burns, are there to assist,” Erickson said.
