The benefits of shopping small

Monday, November 06, 2017

American Express started Small Business Saturday as a shopping “holiday” back in 2010. The idea was to encourage shoppers to support small, local businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Initially, AmEx even offered customers a credit for patronizing local businesses.

Since then, Small Business Saturday has taken on a life of it’s own. In 2016, an estimated 112 million people participated, injecting billions of dollars into local economies. We know shopping local can have a big impact. The Andersonville Study of Retail Economics found a small business generates 70 percent more local economic activity per square foot than a big box store.

You might consider shopping small every day of the year, but especially on Small Business Saturday, which is November 25.

Consumers can find out more and businesses can sign up to participate online.
