It’s not always easy for entrepreneurs to obtain the financing they need to grow their businesses. But GROW South Dakota’s small business lending program is a powerful resource that’s been helping fill funding gaps for decades.

A GROW South Dakota loan helped Hillarey Holland, owner of HH Design in Britton, purchase a screen printing machine in August of 2017. Previously, HH Design was outsourcing its screen printing. Now that can be done in-house, which results in considerable savings.

This crucial piece of equipment has enabled Holland to expand her business and increase profits. She appreciated Grow South Dakota’s simple application process and notes that such a low interest loan can really help someone who’s trying to build a business.

Holland moved away for school and worked for a design firm in Aberdeen for a while. Living away from home also made Holland realize how much she enjoyed life in Britton, so she quit her job and moved back.

Since then, Holland has slowly been growing her graphic design business. “When I first went to school I didn’t think I’d be able to do graphic design in a small town, but I made it work,” she says.

Holland started out working from home, then transitioned to renting a space. Eventually, she was able to buy a commercial building just off Britton’s Main Street. That storefront has been a boon for business. “Having a more physical presence helped because people know where to find me,” she says, noting that her sales were up 50 percent last year.

HH Design offers a range of graphic design services, from banners to brochures and business cards. Holland designs and sells school spirit apparel as well. She notes that many people order apparel from online companies, but those products have a generic rather than custom design, which sets her apart.

As president of the local chamber of commerce, Holland provides some design work pro bono to support area businesses. She’s currently helping to organize promotions for the upcoming Small Business Saturday, a shopping holiday that urges consumers to patronize small and independent businesses on November 24.

Holland has long understood the importance of supporting local businesses. Her dad is a business owner who impressed upon her the importance of buying local — even if it cost a little more — because of the impact of such actions on the area economy.

“If people don’t support local businesses in town, it’s possible that eventually we won’t have local businesses. People don’t realize that,” says Holland. “Once local businesses are lost, people realize how much they’re actually needed.”

GROW South Dakota has now financed more than $70.3 million in business loans in northeast South Dakota. Find out more at: http://www.growsd.org/business-lending
