Local Entrepreneur Celebrates Women's Small Business Month
Tuesday, October 04, 2016
Janelle Swanson is an entrepreneur and has always found a way to get paid for something she is passionate about. This time, it was animals. “I have always loved animals,” stated Janelle, "and I was hearing that people were taking their pets outside of town to board them." So she decided to startup a business called Paws & Claws – this is in addition to the business she already operates as a commodity broker. Paws & Claws is a facility located in Britton and specializes in boarding and grooming pets.
Janelle contacted GROW South Dakota and Glacial Lakes Area Development, a local economic development group, to provide technical assistance and an affordable financing package to get the pet boarding businesses started. Janelle stated that GROW South Dakota helped her solidify the idea of starting Paws & Claws, “They helped me with items like a projected cash flow statement. When you are doing a project like this, you need to do it right the first time."
A year after opening, Janelle and her husband Kirk couldn’t be happier with the success of the business. She is exceeding her income projections and provides a service the community desires. But most of all, Janelle said, “I love getting up every day knowing I’m getting paid for something I love to do." However, she does admit starting a new business is a lot work. Janelle stated that you need to be organized and plan on working a lot. Anyone looking to utilize the services of Paws & Claws should contact her by calling 448-8406 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
