Virginia Maas is no stranger to hard work. As a single parent, she worked an average of seventy hours a week while raising her son. She built her own home and worked hard to keep it in good condition over the years. Virginia took great pride in her work and raising her family.

Then tragedy struck. Virginia was diagnosed with cancer. No longer being able to work, Virginia’s attitude toward life changed. Things she used to take for granted, like being able to fix just about anything when it broke, now became nearly impossible for her. She was forced to retire and live on social security. Little by little, her house starting falling apart and there was nothing she could do to fix it.

After a referral from Social Services, Virginia contacted GROW South Dakota for help. They did an audit on her house and immediately started on her projects. Crew members replaced her furnace and refrigerator, which were not working properly. They also put insulation in the attic along with fans in her bathroom. They sealed and repaired her windows and doors. Even her porch received sheet rock.

“GROW South Dakota has been a godsend for me. I have never been treated so nice. The fellows who came out were really professional and caring. They were very friendly and took good care of me,” stated Virginia.

Now that repairs have been made, Virginia can focus on healing. “This program has made a great difference in my life.”
